When Can Baby Eat Apple and Avocado Puree?

Both apples and avocados are great first foods for baby.

This means that you can offer it as soon as you start weaning. Some parents prefer to serve ingredients on their own first before combining them. Just on the off-chance that baby has a bad reaction to one of them.

Can You Freeze Avocado Puree for Baby?

You can make extra puree and freeze it by spooning some puree into ice cube trays and putting in the freezer. Although it’s OK to freeze avocado puree for baby, keep in mind that the avocado may lose a bit of its taste.

If you’ve used formula milk or breast milk to blend your puree it’s not suitable for freezing. Only freeze it if you’ve used water to blend it with.

We would recommend consuming avocado puree within 1 month of freezing to get the most nutritional benefit.

What Age Can I Start Weaning Baby?

General guidelines are to wean baby after 6 months of age although a number of parents choose to wean sooner under certain circumstances, but never before 17 weeks.

If you choose to wean before six months age, baby food must be pureed.

After six months of age baby has lost the tongue thrust reflex (where they push anything unfamiliar out of their mouth) and most importantly they can sit up unsupported.

At six months parents might choose to begin introducing solids through spoon feeding or also through baby led weaning.

What is Baby Led Weaning?

Baby led weaning, which has grown in popularity in recent years, is simply allowing your baby to take the lead in choosing and eating solids.

Instead of spoon feeding your baby, you can offer soft food in pieces that are big enough for baby to grasp. This can be offered on its own or alongside baby’s purees.

Whichever route you go down, apple and avocado are both great first foods for baby.

We’ve made ours as a puree for babies that are just starting out with their first foods.

After six months’ age you can take a few pieces of fruit out of the steamer and offer it to baby alongside the puree.

How to Make Apple and Avocado Puree for Baby?

Here we steam the apple slices and then blend it together with uncooked ripe avocado.

There is no need to cook avocado for baby, but it is a good idea to check that it is soft and ripe.

If you’re not blending the two ingredients together into a puree (but serving them as finger food instead) then you want to be especially careful that the avocado is completely ripe and soft. This is so that baby can mash it with their gums.

Apple and Avocado Puree

Ingredients

  • ½ apple, peeled and cut into batons
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the apple into pieces. If you’re offering some apple as finger food, cut them into batons that are big enough for baby to grasp.
  2. Steam or boil the apple pieces for 10 minutes until soft.
  3. Scoop out a ripe avocado. Again if you’re offering some avocado to baby as finger food then cut some extra pieces out into long thick batons too.
  4. Place the steamed apple in a blender together with the soft ripe avocado. Add enough water to get the mixture to your desired consistency. Blend until smooth and creamy.

1

Steam the Apple Pieces

Peel and chop your apple into slices. Place in a steamer.

We have used Pink Lady apples because they are naturally sweet but you can use other varieties.

Steam for about 10 minutes until soft. (You can also boil your apples, but steaming is generally considered to preserve more nutrients).

2

Blend with the Avocado

Scoop out the avocado and add it to the blender or food processor with the steamed apple pieces.

Add a little water and blend. Adjust with more water afterwards if necessary until you get the right consistency.

If your baby is over 6 months old and ready to begin exploring solids with their hands, you can cut a few extra slices of soft avocado into thick batons.

Serve these alongside the puree for baby to play with and practise eating as finger foods.
