Step 1: Paint the background colour

First paint the backs of your spoons in the main background colour of each character from The Gruffalo.

We chose a chocolate brown for the Gruffalo, light brown for the owl, yellow for the mouse, orange for the fox and green for the snake.

We used acrylic paints, which give a nice even covering on wood.

Step 2: Draw on some fun faces

Now start painting some details onto your spoon characters.

Paint on white circles for the eyes with little black dots in the middle. Then paint their mouths and noses.

We painted little white bits for the fur of the mouse and the fox too.

Step 3: Give them some expressions

Once your paint is dry add further details to bring your characters to life.

You could add whiskers and outline the eyes in black so they stand out more. Frowning eyebrows can give their face a whole new expression too.

Add patterns to some of the animals. You could make little marks for the owls’ feathers in darker brown paint, and you could paint on some markings for the snake in a darker green.

Step 4: Add the ears to finish

You can paint on the ears for each character if you prefer.

Or, like we did, you could cut out little shapes of card and glue them onto the back of the spoon.

Your story spoons are complete and all ready for your child to play with!

These Gruffalo story spoons bring the much-loved book to life
