How to make a teriyaki burger?

Every teriyaki burger needs a teriyaki sauce. You can buy it if you prefer but if you want to make yours homemade it’s really easy.

You just pop all the ingredients into a saucepan and simmer for a few minutes. We’ve left out any sugar and sweeten ours with the natural sugars in honey instead.

You can then make up and grill the beef burgers, spooning some teriyaki sauce over them towards the end. If you like you can top with a slice of cheese too.

Serve in a browned burger bun, with a special teriyaki mayonnaise (teriyaki sauce mixed in with some mayonnaise) and your favourite toppings to make it a completely irresistible meal.

Ingredients

Beef patties

  • 600 grams minced beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, mince
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ red onion – diced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground pepper

Homemade teriyaki sauce

  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 8 tablespoons honey
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • ½ teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 tablespoon corn flour
  • ¼ cup water

Teriyaki mayonnaise

  • ½ cup teriyaki sauce (see our homemade recipe above)
  • ⅓ cup mayonnaise

Toppings

  • 4 brioche buns – seared or lightly toasted
  • 1 slice cheddar cheese
Other toppings of your choice such as caramelised onions, pickles or even our parsnip thyme chips.

Instructions

Homemade teriyaki sauce:

  1. Bring 1 cup water to the boil in a small saucepan.
  2. Pour in your soy sauce, honey minced garlic and ginger. Simmer for a few minutes.
  3. To thicken sauce mix 1 tbsp corn flour mixed with ¼ cup water in a bowl or measuring cup and stir until mixed well. Pour it into the saucepan of teriyaki sauce and keep stirring it until it’s mixed in.

Burger patties:

  1. Add the beef mince, crushed garlic, diced ginger, soy sauce, red onion, salt and pepper to a bowl and mix until combined.
  2. Form the mixture into patties about 8 cm wide.
  3. Heat some oil in a frying pan or on a barbeque grill. Cook the burgers on a medium heat for a few minutes on each side.
  4. Spoon over a little teriyaki sauce when they’re nearly ready.
  5. Towards the end place a slice of cheese on top until melted.

Burger toppings

  1. Make your teriyaki mayo by mixing the mayonnaise with teriyaki sauce. Set aside.
  2. In a frying pan or on the grill, brown both sides of the brioche bun.
  3. Lay them out on a plate. Add your cooked burger to the base of the brioche bun.
  4. Spoon some teriyaki mayonnaise or teriyaki sauce (as you prefer) over the top and add your favourite burger toppings. Enjoy!

1

Make your homemade teriyaki sauce

Place 1 cup water in a saucepan with soy sauce, honey and minced garlic and ginger. Bring it to the boil and simmer for a few minutes.

If it’s runny you may want to thicken your sauce. So in a separate measuring cup mix ¼ cup water with 1 tablespoon cornflour and stir well.

Add it to the teriyaki sauce and keep stirring until well combined. If there are any lumps, press them out with a spoon. Your sauce should be nice and thick.
